What is face lift surgery?

A cosmetic procedure performed in the operating room under general anesthesia that improves visible signs of aging in the face such as sagging, creases, fat that has fallen or disappeared, loss of skin tone, and loose, excess skin.

What is the procedure like?

This procedure is done in the operating room under general anesthesia. This is a 1-day surgery. You do not stay in the hospital overnight. Incisions are made around the hairline and around the ears and lower scalp to remove the excess skin and fat in order to create a more youthful appearance.

A second incision may be needed under the chin to improve excess skin around the chin and neck.

What would my face lift scars look like?

Scars are put in places to be as inconspicuous as possible. Depending on the degree of lift you would need, scars are present along the hairline, around the ears, and towards the back of the scalp.

What is recovery from a face lift like?

After this procedure, you will have swelling and bruising. You will be sent home with a supportive compressive garment to wear around your face. This is to help with this swelling and bruising. You may have some pain and discomfort. This is easily treated with oral pain medications.

It may take weeks to months for the swelling to resolve, although the bruising usually resolves in a few weeks.

When can I go back to work and start exercising again?

Patients can usually return to work in about 1-2 weeks. Any strenuous activity should be avoided for 4 weeks.
